Renovation Workers MUST be Trained!

ECS is offering
Renovation, Repair & Painting Initial Training
during July - December.

Pursuant to EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting Final Rule 40 CFR 745:  Renovations conducted for compensation must be performed by certified firms using Certified Renovators.  This includes landlords and their employees.

Beginning in April 2010, contractors performing renovations, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in target housing and chilld occupied facilities built before 1978 must be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.

Firms MUST be certified by the EPA AND have one or more Certified Renovators on site when disturbing lead-paint in pre-1978 target housing and child occupied facilities.

Renovation Workers must also be trained.  Certified Renovators are responsible for either documenting the training of their workers or may opt to have their workers also trained as Certified Renovators.

*EXTENDED DEADLINE* (as of June 18, 2010)

The EPA has offered additional and sufficient time for renovations firms and workers to obtain the necessary training and certification to comply as follows:

  • Until October 1, 2010, EPA will not take enforcement actions for violations of the RRP Rule's firm certification requirement.
  • EPA will not enforce against individual renovation workers if the person has applied to enroll in, or has enrolled in, by no later than September 30, 2010, a certified renovator class to train contractors in practices necessary for compliance with the final rules. Renovators must complete the training by December 31, 2010.

Avoid EPA fines of up to $32,500 for EACH Violation

Firms who knowingly or willingly violate the EPA regulation may also be fined up to an additional $32,500 per violation and/or face imprisonment.
